More International Student Graduates Can Gain Canadian Work Experience via British Columbia's Pilot Project

British Columbia, Canada launched a pilot project expanding the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program, to include international graduate students from private Canadian education institutions, enabling them gain Canadian work experience after graduation.

More international students will be allowed under the Post-Graduation Permit Program

Canada immigration has broaden the scope one of its immigration programs giving opportunity for international students to gain Canadian experience after graduation.

Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit Program is now extended to include private educational institutions in British Columbia as a pilot project. Under this program, graduates can apply for open work permits for up to three years. Before this project, the program is open only to international students at public universities and colleges and private degree-granting institutions.

A million Canadian jobs are forecasted to be filled in British Columbia by the next decade and one area they are looking at to fill these vacancies is from international students who gained Canadian work experience.

It really makes sense for Canada to find international students - who got Canadian education, already comfortable in Canada and would later gain Canadian work experience - very much suitable for permanent resident status.

Canada really stand to gain from having all those bright young minds work in Canada in graduation that can eventually lead to citizenship.

Consultation for Changes in Canada's Federal Skilled Workers Program Underway

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will start consultation today for the changes to be made on Canada's Federal Skilled Worker Program.

CIC wants to improve the program in the hope of selecting immigrants who have the best chance to integrate themselves in Canada and be better contributors to the country's economy.

Canada CIC - Federal Skilled Worker Program Consultation
Citizenship and Immigration Canada
CIC will consult on:
  • requiring federal skilled workers to have a minimum level of language proficiency
  • making the program more accessible to skilled tradespeople, technicians and apprentices
  • placing greater emphasis on younger immigrants who will adapt more easily and be active members of the work force for a longer time frame
  • redirecting points from work experience to other factors that better contribute to success in the Canadian work force
  • reducing the potential for fraudulent job offers
Source Canada CIC Website
The in-person consultations start today with key stakeholders in five cities across Canada. The consultation sessions are not open to the general public and media. Organizations or individuals who may also have stakes on the Federal Skilled Workers program but isn't invited with the in-person consultations are not entirely left out. They can submit their inputs online - here - until March 17. The results of the consultation will be publishes on CIC website in spring/summer of 2011.

I hope that the changes they will arrive at would focus more on skills and work experience. These two, I think, are the best indicators what an immigrant can contribute when he or she arrives in Canada.

For those interested in to land Canada jobs or migrate to Canada, they are highly encouraged to act now and take the FREE Online Assessment - Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program. They might not be eligible after the proposed changes to the program is implemented.

Filipino Seafarer Claim Due Benefits, Aided by Phil. Consulate in Colombo

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Join me in lauding the officials of the Philippine Honorary Consulate General in Colombo in Sri Lanka for helping a Filipino Seafarer in claiming his insurance and back wages from a Sri Lankan shipping firm.

Mr. Henry Laguardia served aboard the M/V Brillante Virtuoso, where he met an accident and suffered burns.

The consulate there and, I believe his manning agency - the Status Maritime Corp- both helped Mr. Laguardia rightfully claim his due compensation and benefits from the Ceyline Shipping Limited who owned the ship.

This is a good example of the government and the manning agency helping our Filipino seafarers or OFWs in general.

Filipino seafarers are amongst the best when it comes to maritime skills. They rightfully deserve the support of the government and their agencies because of they are a big help to the economy and a source of pride for serving well in their capacity.

Chemical Engineering Career in Canada

Saturday, February 12, 2011

A chemical engineer is a good career to aspire for and to pursue because of the opportunities it brings one and chemical engineering-related careers will be in demand in Canada after 2011 to 2020.

When I was taking up engineering, most of the professors and fellow students I asked cited chemical engineering to be the most difficult field of engineering. Remembering my high school chemistry days of redux and balancing chemical equations just made me nod my head in approval.

But I recently found out that chemical engineering offered a lot of career possibilities. A degree in chemical engineering can land you in good engineering positions in the oil industry, petrochemicals, and biomedical work.

For those looking to land good chemical engineering jobs, they ought to emulate Ryan Martin, now a production engineer in Enerplus. He rightfully chose chemical engineering in college because he saw the avenues it can open up for him, learned as much as he could and is now reaping the fruits of his decision and persevarance at Enerplus, one of Canada's oldest and largest independent oil and gas producers.

The Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada reports that,

The petroleum industry will continue to provide significant job opportunities through 2020. The industry's aging workforce will drive significant replacement demand. And that key engineering roles such mechanical engineers, chemical engineers and petroleum engineers will expericence shortages after 2011 and through 2020.

Industrial Meat Cutters, Butchers, Poultry Preparers & Related Jobs NOC 9462

Don't you know that a meat cutter is a registered trade?

A meat cutter prepares meat or poultry for further processing, for packaging or for marketing and can either be a retail meat cutter or an industrial meat cutter.

Retail meat cutters can found from a small-family owned meatshop common on wet markets or those on supermarket chains. Industrial meat cutters are those who worked in production-oriented facilities, and generally perform fewer but repeated tasks.

Butchers and meat cutters belong in the same work group. Meat cutters are slowly replacing the term butchers. Butchers deal with meat at the carcass stage while meat cutters prepares the meat into primal cuts either for immediate cooking needs or for further processing or for packaging.

The following are some of the main duties of Industrial Meat Cutters, Butchers, Poultry Preparers & Related Jobs :
  • Industrial butchers slaughter livestock using stunning devices and knives; skin, clean and trim carcasses; remove viscera and other inedible parts from carcasses; split carcasses into smaller portions to facilitate handling; and may slaughter cattle, calves and sheep as prescribed by religious laws.
  • Industrial meat cutters cut beef, lamb, pork or veal carcasses or sides or quarters of carcasses into primal cuts for further cutting, processing or packaging; remove bones from meat; and cut meat and poultry into specific cuts for institutional, commercial or other wholesale use.
  • Poultry preparers slaughter poultry and remove inedible parts; remove feathers and singe and wash poultry to prepare for further processing or packaging.
  • Trimmers remove skin, excess fat, bruises or other blemishes from carcasses or meat portions.

2 Million New US Jobs This Year

After the relatively good news about the increase of Canadian jobs, here's another positive news. There's one economist that sees the US economy adding two million new US jobs in 2011.

2 Million New US Jobs in 2011

Scott Brown, said to be the most accurate forecaster of jobless rate in the past two years, sees the increased consumer spending will factor primarily in generating two million new US jobs.

In other words, Americans should spend more in order for businesses to notice the demand for their products which in turn will convince them to add more jobs. Proof of the increased consumer spending were the increased gate attendance on Disney theme parks and increased advertising in cable networks. I'm sure the Super Bowl helped.

This may sound advocating materialism, but I realized seasonal spending, like in this upcoming valentines, has its own positive effect. I am a sportsfan myself and I think that the line-up of upcoming big sporting events such as the March Madness & the NBA finals, can contribute to increase advertising revenues and sale of sport merchandize.

I hope that Scott Brown would be right about the two million new US jobs which I think the other economists would'nt mind being wrong about.

69,200 New Canadian Jobs Generated, A Big Reason for Job Seekers to be Optimistic

Sunday, February 6, 2011

Job seekers in Canada got a reason to smile about. In a recent AP report, Canada was able to generate 69, 200 new jobs in January alone.

Others are skeptical about the numbers but the job data numbers are on the uptrend for the past three months. While a healthy skepticism isn't necessarily bad, I think that it is always better to be optimistic. Like looking at this breakdown of the Canadian job numbers for January.

This sure is a sign that Canada is moving to recovery from the global financial crisis faster than US and other G7 nations.

The increase in Canadian jobs generated means more opportunities out there and can certaily boost the morale of job seekers in Canada.

World Class Filipino Seafarers Set to Capture Half of Global Seafaring/Manning Jobs

Saturday, February 5, 2011

Filipino seafarers are amongst the best in the world. The Philippine seafaring industry has long been providing highly skilled seafarers and currently makes up at least 30% of the mariners worldwide.

The industry is seriously targeting 50% of mariner jobs globally in the next few years. Leaders of the Joint Manning Group (JMG), the umbrella organization of seabased manning agencies in the Filipinos, shared the heavy investments for world class training modules and training facilities, enabling Filipino seamen to handle the most sophisticated sea vehicles in the world. Filipinos are capable ship handlers from captains to mates.

These efforts of the stakeholders in the seafaring and manning industry will surely boost the stock of Filipino mariners amongst shipping companies leading to more seaman jobs. These efforts should be lauded and should be continued.

Shipping companies worldwide can entrust their ships to Filipino seafarers because they are highly competent and highly motivated to perform really well.

I have a few seaman friends who have worked across the world seas. Most of them have risen in rank because they continuosly train and upgrade their knowledge and skill whenever they can during their stay in the Philippines. I feel proud of the contributions of Filipino mariners/seafarers in world.
